As an Aspiring Alpinist, it's been crucial to have people who can guide me along the way. Just as with any pursuit in life, the community you decide to surround yourself with is important to your growth. It's the community that takes you to the next level.
Even more specific to community is the importance of a mentor. Someone older and more advanced. Someone who knows how to push you at the right moment, but also knows when to back off and give you a break.
I’ve been lucky enough to find that mentor in Matt Lloyd. He’s become a good friend and someone who I can really look up to. He knows when I’m playing it safe and how to push me, but he’s also incredibly patient with me. I didn’t grow up in the mountains and have only been climbing for a short period of time and it’s easy to think that I wasn’t meant to go down this path.
So, connecting with a seasoned climber is one of the best things that’s happened to me as I pursue my big mountain dreams. Some days we go out and have really exhilarating moment. Other days I’ll just sit there and belay Matt while he works on his project. But, in both situations I'm constantly learning. Learning what commitment and dedication looks like. Learning how to block fear and stop playing it safe. So, thank you for constantly encouraging and inspiring me.
I think Matt often forgets to realize just how much he has to offer and this is my simple way of reminding him.
